Most pickers quietly clamp your screen's color into sRGB and hand you the leftovers. HexPic reads the pixel in its native color space, so a vivid P3 red stays a vivid P3 red.

Why P3
Every Mac made in the last decade has a Display P3 panel — around 25% more visible color than sRGB, mostly in the reds, oranges and greens. If your picker reports sRGB, every one of those colors comes back wrong, and quietly.
HexPic reads the pixel through the display's own color profile and reports both: the wide-gamut P3 value, and an honest sRGB fallback for when you need one.

Yes — macOS only, and that's deliberate. HexPic is built directly on macOS screen-capture and color-management APIs so it can read a pixel in its true display color space. There's no iOS, Windows, or web version, and none is planned.
macOS 13 Ventura or later, on Apple silicon or Intel. It ships as a universal binary, signed and notarized by Apple. On first launch macOS will ask for Screen Recording permission — that's the system permission required to read pixels from the screen, and it's the only one HexPic asks for.
Reading the color of a pixel means reading the screen, and macOS gates that behind Screen Recording. HexPic only samples the pixels under your cursor while the picker is open. Nothing is recorded, stored, or sent anywhere.

Yes. Drag the loupe onto any connected display and HexPic reads that display's own color profile — so a color picked on your external monitor reports that monitor's values, not your built-in screen's.
